New Resources: FMLA and Mental Health

Reed Group’s Chief Compliance Officer, Marti Cardi, was a lead speaker at the opening sessions of the 2013 Annual conference for the Disability Management Employer Coalition in Atlanta last week.  The conference focused this year on mental and behavioral health issues.  Keynote speaker Rosalynn Carter addressed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and joined a panel discussing mental health parity. Marti led a plenary session Monday morning of the conference, “An Employer’s Guide to Managing Mental and Behavioral Health under the FMLA and the ADA,” co-presenting with the Department of Labor’s Diane Dawson, and Pierce Blue from the EEOC.

Marti talked about the five steps employers should take to be “mental health” ready in the workplace, including fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and compliance, ensuring proper reporting procedures and policies, and training supervisors and staff.  She offered guidance on managing some key workplace issues that accompany mental health conditions, such as communications, performance, and conduct.
